If the distributor is for the OEM Delco-Remy electronic ignition system, you need the pulse amplifier (the electronic module part) and the necessary wiring to go with the whole thing. Otherwise the distributor alone won't do you much good. The original Delco magnetic pulse system was an option for several years, although not very popular. But it was pretty good for high speed- it would keep functioning at speeds faster than nearly any engine could run at the time. I had one running at 8000 RPM (1968, or so) and it never missed a beat, and it could have gone faster. That system was replaced by the HEI system.
