My 63 C10 came stock with the 283, Powerglide, and 3.73 rearend. I had no problem smoking the tires.
The 283 is one of the most underrated of the small block V8's. People tend to forget that it launched many of the early Corvettes, Impalas, and ChevyII's before the advent of the 327. It even held it's own pretty well after the 327 came out.
