Hy desert, different methods were used to get oil up to the cylinder head over the years. It sounds like some has replaced one of the factory lines with something of their own design, in order to keep the engine running. The line which supplies the cylinder head should not be involved with the lines to and from the oil filter. The stock oil filter was a bypass type, that is, it only filtered a portion of the oil circulating through the engine, unlike the modern systems which filter all the oil before it goes to the engine bearings. There is a pressure hole near the rear of the block on the left [drivers] side which is the pressure port for the oil filter, the drain back port is closer to the center of the block on the left side.
