I got under he hood during my lunch hour and cleaned things up. I see the little square knob/bump/tit on each of the lever. The one for second gear is worn very badly. I got it to stick or skip second and had a look. The key slot had jumped out on top of this knob and I can see that it needs to be re-shaped and perhaps even lengthened a little.
I am going to get after it this weekend.
