This might seem crazy. I spoke to my uncle about the seal. He is 83 years old. He had multiple stovebolt six engines on his farm. When the rear main started leaking he would only change the bottom half. He said that will take care of most of it. He said to leave the tails long so that they pack in to the upper part of the seal. So far so good for me as well.
