If I remember correctly the swirling you are talking about is called "engine Turn".
Tried it, pretty tough. Maybe I was too picky though.

Edit: I think aluminum could be a better choice for a few reasons. More malleable and easier to engine turn. I have seen it done on steel with a drill and mandrel (think that's what it's called) and on aluminum with sand paper or even steel wool by hand.
