To answer your question - yep! We dropped that baby in with the headers in place. That's also how I ended up with a leak, apparently. Those headers were completely sealed before dropping the engine in. How do I know? The front header is leak free. The rear header (which sits lower than the front) banged the tranny crossmember on the way down. And i'm convinced that's how I got the leak.
I wanted to drop it in that way because I know how difficult tube headers are to seal on inline 6s. So I spent hours getting everything sealed before hand. As I was lowering the engine in I took it down a little too fast and banged the exhaust. I knew then I would have problems and, lo and behold, leakage problems I do have.
Dropping the long engine in with headers that extended 10 inches beyond the back of the block without removing any sheet metal or inner fenders was a 2 person job. It would have gone off without a hitch if I just hadn't taken the ram of the cherry picker down too fast. :mad:
