If you choose to keep the 8 volt battery (really BAD choice!), you'll need to adjust the voltage regulator to 9 volts or slightly higher to allow the generator to recharge the battery. Right now, it's probably maxed out at about 7.5 volts, right where it's supposed to be to recharge a 6 volt. An 8 volt battery is a solution to a nonexistent problem. With a properly-tuned engine, a well-maintained 6 volt system should have no problems starting your engine, hot or cold.
