It may be that they just used the filter assembly from the 283, since the new engine probably did not come with one. Good to hear that you finally found out what you really have. The 327 has long been one of my favorite engines, and being a '68 or '69 would make it a big journal engine which is even better. The 350 is a great engine and it may have a little more grunt, but everbody has one. Besides, "327" just sounds cool.
