On the Austin-Healey 3000 we used to race, there was a split manifold with big pipes back to a single muffler, with two pipes in and out. Just taking the muffler/tailpipe assembly off gave us a tuned-length header for racing. Sounds like it was designed that way, dontcha think? I believe the Jag XKE was set up the same way.
