machine screw.
I have found both round head and pan head 1/4" diameter x 20 thread, 1/2" long machine screws (1/4-20 X 1/2") used to attach sheet metal on 216/235/261 engines. In the mid 1950s, it seems that hex-head machine screws, with and without a flat, Phillips-head center, became more commonly used on pans and side covers.
Maybe someone with a first-generation stove bolt engine will let us know if their screws are round headed or pan headed?
