Yes it works. They were an original option. They have a governer and a solinoid that kicks them in. You can also manually switch them with a kit that is available. It will let you go 60-65 without working the engine too hard. You can also get a different gearset for the rear end, but the OD gives you more speeds and more flexibility. You'll still have a good low gear with it. The shifter is not an issue that I know of whether its column or floor.
