Outside or inside, it took me 30 years to figure out how to easily slide a transmission into place: cut off the heads of two long bolts and place the studs/stems into the top two transmission mounting holes in the clutch housing. Then lift the transmission up to the bolts and slide the transmission home (rotating the main shaft as needed to mate the splines on the front shat into the clutch). This procedure makes this job a cake walk - taper on the outside or on the inside.
This technique makes the installation of even an SM420 an easy one-person (plus a cheap-jack) job.
