On my model B i rebuilt, there are 2 "ball bearings" and i believe they are slightly different in size. I have an old repair manual, and I think it showed that all model B's are not exactly the same. The float level should be indicated on the instruction sheet that came with the rebuild kit. Possibly check your timing for your backfire problem.
