A Detroit at 3,000 RPM is as close to a hand grenade as an engine can get! I've set a few Detroit 8V-71's to a upper governed speed of 2,500 instead of the factory-specified 2100 maximum. I'd only let a select few drivers take those trucks on the road. They had to promise NOT to push the speed above 2,300 RPM, and shift to a higher gear at that speed. The extra 200 RPM at the governor was there to keep the fuel rack fully open all the way to the shift point, not for extra engine speed!
