I guess if anything else in that stage was really off it might mess up the oscillator characteristics.

I have always wondered why they moved away from the variable capacitor tuning in the early sets. I guess space and the design of the push buttons may have been factors. I wonder if dirt was a problem in variable capacitors in car radios.
