Just a suggestion- - - -
While you've got the pointer and ball aligned, go down to the oil pan rail or timing cover, and fabricate a pointer you can see from underneath, maybe from a creeper. Then paint or scribe a line onto the crankshaft pulley in line with the pointer, and you're in business!
