Speaking of the octane selector...I've been pondering on that thing for a day or two. Isn't it really a means for setting maximum distributor advance? I mean, if the base timing is on zero (the pointer is pointing to the ball), and your octane selector is also on zero, then you have about 5 or 6 degrees of advance available to the distributor when you accelerate. If you move your octane selector from this base, you either increase or decrease the amount of advance (and therefore power) available to the engine...I'm askin' here...not tellin'...any other explanations?
