I've done a ton of carburetors over the years. The only time I ever had to deal with a fire was when I had the top off a Quadrajet and some jerk cranked the engine. A couple of rags put the fire out. Never once got burned hand choking a carb, but I'm sure it could happen. And yeah, matchbooks were a handy way to set the points in an emergency.
