A valve sticking open some can allow the pushrod to pop out. If a valve is not closing all the way and you do a valve adjustment, the valve will be held open forever. This is because the valve sticking open a little creates excess clearnce in the valve train. If an adjustment removes the clearance then the valve can't close.
