The crud was so deep and thick in my 261 that I had to remove the drain tap on the lower rear of the driver's side of the block and use a piece of #12 copper wire to slowly loosen the crud. Every so often I would clean-out loosened material with a hose sprayed into the tap hole or a hose connected to a heater hose fitting on the water pump (thermostat removed).

This is much easier to do with the engine off and the water pump removed.
