After a few good raps without success, I went to Auto Zone and borrowed their ball joint press. It still took my 1/2" breaker bar and a good amount of pulling and tapping to get it out. It was swedged in there. I guess that was an overkill method they used early on and discontinued in later models. But...Thanks to all of you for your methods. I suspect there is more than one way to skin this cat, but the press worked.
