hi guys

i have done most of the wiring on my 51 styleline. it has a 216 engine.

i tried starting it tonight and it would catch and sort of start. i did not let it run for more then a few seconds because of the smoke test.

first i have converted from 6 to 12V. I was told that i need a balast resistor. It was the first thing to start smoking. does a 216 with points ignition and a universal 12V coil need a balast resistor???

the second thing that started smoking is my starter/solenoid. I was told that i can use the origional 6V starter as long as i only crank it for no more then a few second at a time so that it does not overheat. it srarted smoking as well and the battery wires (1 guage) got fairly warm. as well.

BTW i was using the origional 6V solenoid. Not usre if had to be changed to a 12V solenoid or not.

also i am using a fairly powerful battery 850CCA

please help
