I am glad there was so much consensus on the solution to my problem. Here is how it played out for me.
The screws were a size #10 with a 28 pitch thread. when I went to the to my local ACE Hardware store to find a helicoil, I could only find a #10/24 or the next size up was a #10/32. Even when stepping down to a #8/24 I thought there was just not enough material surrounding the hole to make it work. So I did a retapping using a #12/24. The tap cut just enough of the surrounding material to give me good threads.
I am sorry if I disappointed every one but that is how I worked it out. By the way, I gave it one good pull on the choke and the truck runs great. I have made no further adjustments to the carb after rebuiding it.
One other thing I used pine sol to soak my carb in over night. I am very pleased at how well it cleaned it up. My wife loved the fresh pine scent in my garage.
