Keep a fire extinguisher or some water close at hand. Things got sort of complicated..you tried the original distributor for spark and it DID zap, but now you have swapped units, added fuel and got a backfire. The original turned very hard you said...not proper, but maybe unrelated to the current state of affairs.

Now you are going to have to properly time the newly installed distributor and try again. You are sort of back to minus square one.

Point gap and timing will have to be verified on the distributor, and if indeed this was the problem, it should start.

Did you ever try a little squirt of gas into the carburetor with the original Pertronix distributor installed..did this do anything?

The basic problem, as mentioned earlier, is no fuel or no spark. Each one of these items need to be positively proved or disproved. Keep going, you will find it. smile
