I won't cast dispersions on your mechanic..but if he has been doing it for 28 years and Sta-lube has been kicking around for 28 years too, I would say that means something.
I have never attended a board meeting at a major oil company gathering, but I can't imagine they sit around and say " how can we build and sell a inferior product". There are lots of myths out there, especially about oils and greases.
