Wally - now to contradict an earlier post.
I have an inline filter between the shut off valve at the bottom of the tank and the steel line going to the pump.
I also have an inline at the entrance to the carb.
The bottom one required changing about 3 times before the tank grit was sloshed out from driving.
That is the only time I experienced fuel starvation. I didn't know what the junk would do to the pump and figured I would rather not pump it through.
