Check the timing with a timing light, or by ear if that works for you.
One symptom of overly advanced timing is overheating, not sure that is any or all of your problem, but it is worth looking at.

Also, the number of turns for the carb adjustments are only starting points, you need to tune by ear and trial and error from there.
