Having to add Zinc to motor oil for flat lifter cams is a myth. This subject has been beat to death repeatedly yet it still surfaces.
It might be a good idea to throw some in during break in but all major motor oil manufacturers have reassured people that modern oils are perfectly capable of handling non-roller lifters.
Lifter/cam failures are almost always the result of cheap parts made from inferior materials.
I agree 100%. Also need to throw in improper assembly, especially from the so-called "profesional" engine builders that are quick to blame the oil instead of warranteing their shoddy workmanship. Also, incorrect parts matching, like using a far too stiff valve spring with a street hydraualic cam.
I've actually had the chance to see how the oil wear tests are done through my work (we're and authorised Valvoline Oil Change Center), Valvoline actually uses a flat tappet cam engine (Buick 231) for the cam wear test. Nevermind all of the flat tappet vehicles we put SM grade oil in every day. Have yet to have one come back with an engine failure claim.
