guys,
im sure this has been discussed before, but doing a search for "toyota steering box" does not help.
i want to install power steering on my 57 1/2 ton truck.
i want to use a toyota power steering box, (or any other), that will mount to the top of the frame. i dont want to use the chevy saginaw box from the 70's trucks, that mount to the outboard side of the frame, since it causes interference with the drivers tire on sharp right turns.
here are my questions.
#1 what year toyota box should i search for ?
#2 does it have to be from a 4x4 truck ?
#3 will the power steering lines from a chevy pump work with the toyota box, or will i have to have custom lines made ?
#4 will i use 2 u-joints and a double "D" shaft to connect the steering column to the box ?
#5 how do i disconnect the original box from the original steering column, just cut it with a hack saw, sawsall ?
i want to use my original steering column, and seen an article where you cut away the outer sheet metal cover, to expose the inner steering shaft, and classic parts has a bearing to put into the sheet metal cover and the shaft rides inside the bearing.
i pretty much have a lot ot the info i need, like that column bearing, drag link, steering arm, the only thing i am at a loss is what year toyota truck do i look for a pump from, and if it mounts to the top of the frame, and does it matter if its a 2 or 4 wheel drive unit ?
any other input would be greatly appreciated.
