Jimmie,
The choke stove went around the exhaust manifold and a hollow tube ran from the hole in the top of the stove to an automatic choke mechanism on the carburetor.
This type of choke was used on Chevrolet automobiles, most likely engines used on Powerglides from 1950 (maybe on all 235 automobile engines from 1954?).
This type of choke was also used on 1954/55 Hydra-Matic equipped Chevrolet trucks (most likely it was used on H-M equipped 1953-55 GMC trucks, too).
