I have this same symptom in my '49 1/2-ton. Three speed on the column. It seems to happen at slow speeds - if I downshift before slowing, then I avoid the problem. Once stuck, I can't move the shifter and it stays in 3rd until I stop, open the hood, and pull up on the shift linkage.
Wondering if it is in the linkage adjustment, but I haven't wanted to mess that up by tinkering with it.
Any ideas out there?
