I've done it, but other than establishing the fact it will run, there's not much a quick runup will accomplish. There's no way to put it under load, or even keep it cool unless you've got a garden hose piped to the water pump inlet. It might be possible to check oil pressure, and listen for major knocks, but it's a pretty messy, time-consuming project with not much to show for it. I check mine out on an engine dyno, where I can run for several hours if necessary, and do controlled load testing.
