Can we guess? My guess would be some type of coolant filter or coolant conditioner. Let me know if I win a stuffed bear or little cardboard duck.
EDIT. Some '50-'54 rigs had a transmission oil cooler listed. Does that little thing have a couple of tube connections on the back side?
