Fred's descriptions are excellent. Here are two additional pieces of information.

1. The #1 cylinder is near the radiator (not on the firewall end).

2. You have a 50/50 chance of having the rotor pointing to #1 by lining up the ball on the flywheel - the crank rotates twice to fire all six cylinders.

To know if #1 is firing when the ball lines up. either check that both valves for #1 are closed (if you have the valve cover off) or take out the #1 sparkplug and put you finger over the plug hole, to see if there is compression as the ball rotates into position (your finger will feel air blown at it).
