I don't have the manual so this is just a guess. Are these wheel bearings intended to be sealed from the axle tubes and differential, therefore need to be packed with grease. Maybe the seal has leaked and allowed gear lube in where it doesn't normally belong.
I didn't think the concept of gear lube lubricated rear wheel bearings came along until later than '46.
