don't know of anyway to fake it w/ a main seal - if the seal don't work the seal ain't right - especially if Fel-Pro didn't suggest anything other than changing install technique a bit
I used the rope seal in my 57 and it worked fine - was advised by an oooold mech that the neoprene didn't work well where rope was original, tho I seem to recall others here saying they'd used it
