What they said. The "new" latches are all JUNK. Make friends with a machinist, then have him/her re-build your latches for you.
You can buy springs for them that work pretty well, and the repair clips that go on the catch mechanism work pretty good. I'd say order all of the parts for them you can then see what you can do.
