Well that's a little outside my usual area of expertice, but I can tell you that the swap would not be trivial because they are different underneath.

Since the '88 to '98 trucks can now be bought pretty cheap I'm wondering why you would want to swap to the older platform?

I'm imagining it only makes sense if you want a solid axle four-wheel-drive, and the '87 happens to be one, but you may have an even better reason.
