Had some help from a good friend and changed my headliner. Now it matches the seat material and has the same “stitch” design as the them as well.
It wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought and only cost about $60.00. We used 3/16” plywood, dense foam, some 3M 08088 glue and fabric.
I shoved a piece of cardboard in the slot, drew a line on it around the hole and then cut it for a template to cut the plywood. When you have the plywood base right, you spray glue on the wood and the foam separately and let them set for about 5 to 8 minutes – once you touch them together, they are stuck so make sure you place them where they need to be.
The next step is to cut the lines in the foam. Using a straight edge, draw the lines in the foam. Then move the straight edge about 1/16” to 1/8” past each side of your line and cut a “V” in the foam down to the wood and peel the pieces out.
Now you lay the fabric over the foam. Pull ½ of it back and spray both the foam and fabric with glue. After it sets for the 5 to 8 minutes, ease the fabric over to the first cut line. When you hit it, we used a wooden dowel to push the fabric into the V, smooth it on to the next V and repeat. When that’s done, fold the other ½ back, spray glue, wait, and repeat.
That’s the cliff notes for doing this job. It may not be perfect, but I’m very happy with it – especially for a first time.
