My 1929-1951 Master Parts catalog list 8 1/4-20 x 5/16 Bolt with Lock Washer(actually slotted screws and 2 1/4-20 x 5/8 Bolt(actual) with lock washer. The shop manual disassembly makes no reference to different size screws. Perhaps someone used what was handy at the time when they had the timing cover off for some reason.
