They should open the same distance. Sounds like right door stop is short or the left one is worn and goes too far. That would make you think the right one is short. I am guessing your not missing the stop on the driver door because you would know it with a creased up door...they leave a nasty dent when they swing back too far..it would make me cry to see it.
I have seen where folks put a piece of heater hose and a water pipe clam around it to help as the door stop wears and lets the door start rubbing the fender heel. That makes the stop short.
