There is about a 2" long nipple that is between the fitting you describe that screws into the bottom of the bank. Use care because the nipple is easily broken. To remove the tank, slide the seat as far forward as it will go. Remove the top and bottom seat cushion. The top is held by 3 small clutch head screws. The bottom just lifts out. This will give you access to the nuts holding the straps. I used to use a Ford 1/2" Y block distributor wrench to unscrew the nuts. However, I now have a flex handle 1/2" ratcheting box end. The last fuel tank I removed took less than 1/2 hour after I had drained the fuel.
