As applied to my 1950, 3600, here is what I found and installed.
The original cushion had burlap hog ringed over the springs, then a horsehair mat that covered top and sides and was sewn at the corners. On top of this was a cotton pad covering the top and sides and the Naugahyde upholstery cover went over this and was held on to the frame by the barrel spring clips.

I used new burlap; the old horsehair mat was in excellent shape and had never had mice living in it. I covered that with new cotton batting, than applied the new reproduction cover over that and as with the original held it with the barrel clips. I think the secret to having a comfortable seat lies in the horsehair mat that distributes the weight over the frame evenly.
This seat is quite comfortable to me and even my “big old wife” enjoys the ride. Most of my trips are around 100 miles usually a 1/2 to 1 hour long.
