Thanks for this input group, much appreciated. I think my next step will be to tighten up carb and manifold to deal with possible air leaks and keep up the vacuum in the throat (with no gasket sealer). After that I'll check the needle valve and install an inline filter (there was no filter on the gas line, only the strainer).
