Hy bbqhauler, fuel pumps "usually" fail outright, that is they don't supply fuel at all, rather than work sometimes and not others. Your problem sounds to me like a carb problem, more specifically a float level problem. I would do a fuel pump pressure check, and rebuild the "Q" jet, hope that helps.
