Three things to think about on your new old truck adventure:
-- Take your time finding a truck, search and search, and go look at several before you seriously consider buying one. Always buy one in the best possible condition you can find and afford at the same time. It never pays to buy a rust bucket thinking you'll save money by fixing it yourself..
-- Don't get to deep into the project to start with, try to keep all repairs and improvements small and manageable so you can continue to drive with minimal down time, helps to stay motivated. Hold off on the modern engine swap for a few years till you are comfortable working on the old 216 or 235, then you will be better prepared for the big upgrades, and more knowledgeable. You will be satisfied with the work for a long time to come, whereas if you jump in unprepared you may find yourself redoing stuff not long after.
