I would suspect that you're running out of fuel. Either you have a restriction in your supply lines or the pump is not working properly. If it will idle when you pull to the side of the road, it has enough volume to support that, then maybe a little more to help refill the bowl, but not enough volume to keep the bowl full at speed.
