When the axle is under the spring the blocks are called lifts, and the make the vehicle higher.
If you peak under the front of your '50 you'll see that the axle is under the springs, so you can't lower the truck by inserting blocks.
I've seen people grind the spring bracket off the axle and weld new ones on the lower edge, allowing moving the axle on top of the springs. That lowers the truck quit a bit all in itself, but it also makes the axle close enough to the frame that you're likely to have some problems.
