Sorry to hear about the smoke. These old rigs have hardly any fuses so barbecues can happen. The wiring diagram I looked at shows a power wire from ammeter to horn with the ground being supplied by the button on the steering wheel. This could easily cause your problem. Keep us posted and think "fuse".
